Since the NFL decided to reign in their video media solely to NFL.com, I’ve heard mixed reviews as to how effective this has been. Obviously, traffic on the NFL.com site must be at an all time high because anyone wanting to see anything NFL-related on the web basically has to surf to that site.

I’ll give the NFL some credit. When I first heard about this I was sure that it would be a complete mess. Surprisingly, the user interface for NFL Video isn’t bad and I imagine they’ll continue to make improvements as time passes.

One obvious addition they need to make is the ability to embed their videos. This would still allow the NFL to see the click-thru traffic, make viewers watch video ads, and maintain video production control. More importantly, it would create a unique union between a pro sports league and the social mediasphere.

The NFL finally realized how empowering NFL.com can truly be if utilized properly. I imagine other leagues (MLB, NBA, NHL, etc.) have been keeping tabs on this and will soon have their own measures in place to keep some of their (video) content exclusive.
