The folks over at Tecmoblog recently broke down the power rankings in this year’s Madden ‘08.  This is their second year doing this, check out last year’s power rankings here.  The criteria for their rankings is as follows:

  • How many players are rated in the 90s? Sure depth is nice to have in football, but in Madden the stars are the ones who are most likely to win the game for you.
  • Talent at the key Madden offensive positions (QB, RB, TE, and WR)? You can agree or disagree, but I don’t value the defense as highly as the offense in Madden. Offense wins games in the video game world. Bonus points for a strong line.
  • Ability to pass rush? No matter how good your secondary is, if you can’t put pressure on the QB, your buddy is going to pick you apart. Although we have to give bonus points for highly rated DBs that can bail you out of tough spots.
  • The classic Madden favoritisms? There are always a few head scratchers thrown in that seem to inevitably skew the competitive balance.
  • While it is certainly an imperfect system, it gives you an idea of what to expect from each team in this year’s game. So here’s the list with the number of 90 players in parentheses.

With that in mind, below are the top 10 teams in this year’s Madden:

1.  New England Patriots
2.  Indianpolis Colts
3.  San Diego Chargers
4.  Cincinnati Bengals
5.  Atlanta Falcons
6.  Baltimore Ravens
7.  St. Louis Rams
8.  Dallas Cowboys
9.  Arizona Cardinals
10.   Tennessee Titans
