In an excellent article this past Saturday in the New York Times, columnist Abigail Lorge extolls the growing participation of women in fantasy sports leagues and how women are holding their own against men - and winning. According to Lorge, in 2000, only about 3 percent of all fantasy players were women, but that number has now jumped to 15 percent and growing yearly. And women are not only playing fantasy sports in increased numbers, they are showing to be competitive in an arena formerly thought to be solely that of testosterone-driven males. Lorge cites Title IX in paving the way for women to participate in sports generally that is now seeing an impact in fantasy sports.

It’s really no surprise that some women can perform really well at fantasy sports. Some of the main ingredients of a successful fantasy player: good analytical skills, a lot of time, and a fast internet connection - are traits shared by sports fans, whether they are male or female. It will be interesting to see how this battle of the sexes plays out in the fantasy sports realm.
