Perhaps I’m wildly optimistic, but I would love for Barry Bonds to hit 755 and/or 756 on Sunday, July 29. Imagine the following events that could take place on 7/29/07:
1. Barry Bonds ties/sets the all time HR mark.
2. Cal Ripken and Tony Gwynn are inducted into the Hall of Fame.
3. Commissioner Bud Selig will be in Cooperstown for the HOF ceremonies.
Given this perfect storm of events, it would make for the most ironic day in baseball history. Two of the game’s purest players, Gwynn and Ripken, are getting their due with enshrinement into one of sports most hallowed halls. MLB and it’s front office will be there as well, thousands of miles away from Barry Bonds and his potential wrest of the greatest record in sports.
Deservedly so for Barry. As little attention as possible should be paid to record breaking HR. It would be fitting that a record riddled with controversy would be broken on a day where the commissioner isn’t in attendance. Sure, Bonds could easily sandbag it and wait until the weekend was over but part of me feels that Bonds relishes in the role of the anti-hero.
We’ll know for sure if he decides to go yard on Sunday.
