Watching the home run derby last night, I was amazed of one thing and it surely was not the home runs. It was those kids running aimlessly in a sad attempt to shag fly balls in the outfield. Anyone who watched the thing knows exactly what I’m talking about.

Take this kid for example, he was “lucky” enough to be chosen. Lucky? Perhaps, but not in my book. I can think of better things to do than stand 300 feet away from Vladimir Guerrero while he’s line driving rockets at my head. However, if I was in the outfield I can guarantee that I wouldn’t have my back turned or head down when the ball came by.

Watch one of the million replays ESPN will be showing of the derby and you’ll agree with me. I think I saw one kid (looked like Eric Byrnes Jr.) catch a ball on the fly. Everyone else looked like they saw their life flash before their eyes, moments before they missed the ball. Actually, I wouldn’t be surprised if that was actually the case.

Hopefully it won’t take a kid getting plunked in the head for MLB to realize that it’s not the safest way to keep the kids involved. They took action after Dusty Baker’s kid almost got stampeded in the World Series so hopefully they’ll do the same with this.
