Last month, Fantasy Sports Ventures, led by NFL’s former new media chief Chris Russo, purchased Pro Football Weekly’s entire digital and print operation including fantasy sites KFFL.com and HoopsWorld.com.
Russo said he has letters of intent to acquire three more fantasy sites, while affiliate agreements are completed that will allow it to aggregate more than 30 other fantasy sites (see partial list). FSV hopes to have as many as 50 fantasy sites aggregated by the September launch of the NFL season, and the collection of sites will be aggregated into a FantasyPlayers.com portal that will launch in May.
Fantasy Sports Ventures is undoubtedly gearing up for a fantasy sports media war with ESPN, Yahoo, Sportsline, Fanball, and FSM. =) The still have the site pretty much under the covers, it’s going to be interesting to see what their definition of ’aggregation,’ is. Aggregating content from 30-50 sites is going to pose a lot of challenges to providing an easy, fun-to use, intuitive interface.
