Ultimate Fighting Championships and it’s Mixed-Martial Arts ilk has, over the last few years, arguably eclipsed boxing and wrestling in terms of popularity and market share among young men. Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! Sports posed the question of boxing versus UFC in an article today to Floyd Mayweather, considered by some to be the best pound for pound boxer on the planet. He balked at the idea that a UFC fighter could hurt him, let alone beat him. UFC aficionados would argue that boxers can only punch, but mixed-martial artists can box, kick, wrestle, etc.
Perhaps when the economics of UFC fights outpaces boxing, boxers like Mayweather would have to put their money where their mouth is. Until then, it’s interesting to think of how a UFC v. boxing match would play out.

1I highly doubt that we’ll ever get to see Mayweather in a UFC fight. There’s just no way Mayweather would commit to do it. Of course, I’d pay quite a lot of money to see that one.

3MMA will beat any fighting style. They figured that out in the 90’s.

4There is no doubt that Zuffa will one day put up the money to entice a serious boxing contender or even champion to take the challenge. While the outcome is unpredictable, the smart money is on the MMA if everything else is comparable.
This would be a great way to promote UFC’s champion as the best fighter on the planet.
(BTW, Mike Tyson definitely would do this. He already hangs with the MMAs. Unfortunately, he is no longer a champion or contender.)

5Who needs boxing when you have guys like Bob Sapp in there anyway? I’d love to see UFC create a super heavyweight division, bring in Sapp, Kimbo Slice and other big guys who are short on serious grappling skills yet have heavy hands and just like to strike.
